Does height matter in politics? From a 6’7″ Montenegrin president to the surprisingly average stature of many world leaders, the heights of global powerbrokers tell a fascinating story. In honor of the late Jacques Chirac — a towering 6’2″ figure in every sense of the word — let’s take a deep dive into the heights of the world’s most powerful leaders.

What does this tell us?
One pattern stands out immediately: countries with taller average populations tend to produce taller leaders. Nations like the Netherlands, Serbia, and the Baltic states, where average heights are among the highest in the world, consistently place near the top of this ranking. Coincidence? Probably not.
Even more striking is what the numbers reveal at the global level. The average height of the world leaders on this list is 176.3 cm (5’9½”), almost identical to the global human average of 176.5 cm. For such a small and selective group, that’s a remarkable coincidence.
Does height give leaders an edge?
It’s a question worth asking. History is full of towering figures, quite literally, whose physical presence shaped how they were perceived. De Gaulle’s height was part of his myth. So was Chirac’s easy, confident stride. Meanwhile, plenty of shorter leaders have commanded enormous influence through sheer force of personality.
We’ll be exploring the science behind height and leadership in an upcoming article. Stay tuned — the data might surprise you.
