Delores Ann Pullard, born on August 13, 1946, in De Quincy, Louisiana, stood tall at an astounding 7 feet and 5.5 inches. Her height was certainly an extraordinary part of her life story.
Delores came from relatively average-sized parents; her father, Clarence, was 5 feet 9 inches, and her mother reached a height of 5 feet 11 inches. Her exceptional stature set her on a unique path when, at the age of 19, she joined the Walter Wamous sideshow, where she was showcased as “The Tallest Woman in the World,” towering at a billed height of 8 feet 1 inch. It was within the sideshow that she gained fame, as newspapers reported her height at an astonishing 8 feet 2 inches. This confusion arose from Delores often responding to inquiries about her height with “8-2,” which was misunderstood as 8 feet 2 inches instead of the correct 82 inches (6 feet 10 inches) when she was 14 years old.
As she continued to grow, Delores weighed 431 pounds and wore size 23 shoes. After about three years working for the sideshow, she married a fellow sideshow employee, Mr. James Johnson, who stood at 6 feet 1 inch.
However, in March, her life took a dramatic turn as she underwent surgery to remove a pituitary gland tumor at the base of her brain. Initially, it seemed that she was in satisfactory condition after the operation, but she never fully recovered. Her life came to a close on May 19, 1971, at a time when she was possibly still growing.
Delores Pullard’s towering height was a remarkable aspect of her life, and it undoubtedly made her journey a unique one.
